Introduction to Government

2010-2011 School Year Syllabus
Government and Honors Government
Mrs. Austin

Dear Students and Family:

I would like to say how excited I am about the 2010-2011 school year. Points of focus will be the three branches of government, the American economic system, and the state and local governments. We will be learning how government affects our lives, how we can effect change around us, and how to think and understand both sides of issues in order to make informed decisions.


Grading Scale: A-92-100
B-83-91
C-74-82
D-65-73
F-64 and below

Grade Percentages: Tests= 1/3
Quizzes= 1/3
Classwork/Homework= 1/3

Materials:
Students need to bring needed materials in order to be successful in class.
* Binder/notebook * Textbook
* Paper * Planner
* Pens (blue or black ink only)pencils with pencil sharpener


Behavioral Expectations:
All of the rules and guidelines of Newport News Public Schools and Woodside High School will be enforced in the classroom. Additionally, the students will be expected to abide by the following policies:

Restroom: Water and restroom should be used before the beginning of class.

End of class dismissal: All students will be expected to be in their seats and working until the teacher dismisses them.

Absences: All absences should be kept to a minimum. If class is missed, students are responsible for the lost time and will be responsible for contacting the teacher about materials and notes needed.

Tutorial/Make-up: Will be every Thursday after school. After-school buses are provided.

Turning in Assignments: Students will receive a zero for any assignments not turned in on time. No exceptions.

Arrival to Class: Students are expected to arrive to class on time with necessary materials.

During Class: Students are expected to
• Complete all tasks as part of class work and participation grade
• Raise their hand and wait to be called on
• Respect others’ property and ideas

All homework and classwork assignments will be posted on this website. If a student needs an extra copy or is absent, they will be able to print off a copy. There is also a calendar that will updated with due dates, tests, assignments, etc. that will allow students and parents to know what is going on inside the classroom.
Parent Assist- Is a program that allows parents to track their student’s keys online. Passwords are given out by guidance. Their phone number is 757-886-7538
